BellaOnline iChing - Information

Yang

Yin

iChing is an ancient Chinese practice based on the balance of yin and yang dating from 2800BC. To use iChing, the questioner takes three coins - each having a 'heads' and a 'tails' side. The heads of the coin is the 'Yang', while the tails side is the 'Yin'.

The coins are tossed once onto the ground. If there are three 'Yang' showing, then the toss is said to be a Yang, and a solid line is drawn. If there are two 'Yang' and one 'Yin' showing, the toss is also a Yang. In the same way, three 'Yin' make a dashed line, and two 'Yin' plus one 'Yang' make a dashed line.

This line - either a solid or dashed line - is now the bottom line of a hexagram. A hexagram is made up of six lines, formed by tossing the coins six times. Each time the coins are tossed, another line is added to the hexagram until there are six lines. The six line combination is matched up with a set fortune, that was determined over 4,000 years ago.

If you get all of one type (either all 'Yin' or all 'Yang') in a toss of the coins, this is said to be a 'moving line'. It is not a set-in-stone line - it is a transitional one. The 'moving' and 'stationary' designations only make a difference if you end up with 5 or 6 'moving' lines in a hexagram. This indicates that you should not look at the original version of the hexagram to find your fortune - you should instead turn each moving line into its opposite line and use that as the basis for your evaluation. The BellaOnline iChing program determines this for you automatically and will indicate if your fortune has been done on the moving version of the hexagram.
